Aromatherapy for Winter Blues
When treating winter blues, we have a wide array of essential oils to choose from. They come in the form of anti-depressant oils, sedative oils and oils to treat anxiety associated with depression. Massage is obviously very important: the therapeutic touch is a great healer and a therapist can offer support and encouragement along with the benefits of the essential oils. Other forms of aromatherapy like baths oils are therapeutic too and can easily be used at home, everyday or often. When treating a person suffering from the winter blues it is essential that they approve of the oils chosen - we all have our own preferences. The skill is to select the right oils for each person – giving slightly sedative yet anti-depressant oils to someone who feels abnormally fatigued or lethargic, would be of no benefit at all. Here are some oils which are appropriate, whether for massage, in the bath or burner.
Essential oils used traditionally in aromatherapy for depression:
Anti-depressant oils that are sedative are oils such as Neroli, Lavender, Clary Sage, Camomile, Jasmin, Ylang Ylang or Sandalwood.
Anti-depressant oils that are uplifting are oils such as Bergamot, Orange, Lemon, Mandarin, Grapefruit, Rose, Geranium and Melissa.
Oils that are useful where anxiety is associated with depression are Neroli and Jasmin.
